Why Homebuyers are Seeking this Unique New Trend in Real Estate

Over the past year, a lot of the trends that became a priority to homebuyers were to be expected: solar panels, energy-efficient automated controls, vegetable gardens, entertainment rooms, etc. However, much to the surprise of home designers and real estate agents, the focus thus far in 2014 has been on outdoor living – and not just any outdoor living, but on courtyards.

Blending the indoors with the outdoors has become a big draw-in for people seeking new homes. It might not be something you have seen before, but when you think about it, it falls in line with the lifestyle of the average family in 2014 for a number of reasons. Let’s focus on why homebuyers are seeking this unique new trend in real estate.

Courtyards Make Homes Appear Larger

When your house plan incorporates a courtyard, it is often more private than having a standard backyard. Because of the many ways they can be laid out, courtyards feel like an extension of the house, especially because many people choose to incorporate a vegetable garden or spa area. When combined with an open floor plan for the interior of the house, it creates a fluidity between the indoor and outdoor spaces, giving you more places to relax and making a home feel wide open without more square footage.

Courtyards are a Focal Point

People pay a lot of money for a view of the ocean or some beautiful rolling hills, but when you design your courtyard to suit your needs, it becomes your own hidden oasis. You can plant a lush, colorful garden, install a pond with lively fish or enjoy a swimming pool as the central focus of your house. Many homebuyers are liking the fact that they get a beautiful view no matter where their land is located, making it a great place to live and to host guests.

Courtyards Separate the Guest Suite

In this day and age, a lot of families have “boomerang children”: kids who go away to college and then return home while looking for work or traveling the country. While it is nice to have your older children living at home, a courtyard can help you to separate the guest suite from the house so everyone gets privacy but is still accessible. This also makes for a great place to host visitors – they can be comfortable without feeling like they’re imposing. Better yet, use the courtyard as a way to separate the home from an exercise room or a music studio. You can do whatever you like without having to worry about disturbing the rest of the family.

In this day and age, kids of older and older ages are living at home. The cost of living on the coast is going up and homebuyers want to make an extravagant home out of a piece of land that is not so extravagantly-sized. All of this is possible when you incorporate a courtyard into your house plans, which is why it is one of the biggest real estate trends for 2014.
