Its time to look into the crystal ball and see what the future holds. The home design trends over the past few years show a clear direction. There is no reason the trends won’t continue for the next 12 months. That is not a bad thing! People are becoming more responsible in their choices of materials and design features.

Sustainability

Everyone has become much more aware of their impact on the environment. This is reflected in people’s desire to combine comfortable living with sustainability. Materials such as bamboo, cork, bagasse in particle board, and solar roof tiles are very popular and responsible choices.

Open Floor Plans

This awareness and appreciation of the natural environment is a driving force behind open floor plans. In 2017 you will see more and more home designs featuring an open design. Letting the outdoors inside helps connect us to the world around us. It also helps make homes feel very large and comfortable.

Less Formal – More Flexible

Separate formal space in a home will be seen less and less in 2017. People want spaces in their homes they can use as they see fit. Open floor plans are flexible while still giving boundaries that provide a comfortable feel.

Size Really Doesn’t Matter

The coming year will see more home designs with an emphasis on quality and not quantity. A smart, quality home design will maximize the space. Luxury is not defined by size, but by the utilization of space and the crafting of flow through a home.

Active lifestyles have pushed the bathtub out in favor of walk-in showers. It is not just about time it is about resources. A shower uses much less resources then a bath. Walk-in showers are also easier to maintain.

Another factor in the walk-in showers favor is the aging population. It is easier and safer for people with disabilities to get into and out of a large walk-in shower than a bath tub.
