Is That a Porch, Solana, Loggia?

Have you wondered what the difference is between these terms – porch, solana, loggia?

Lanai: is the Hawaiian word for patio or balcony.  It is a term used to describe a porch or outdoor living area. This area is often shared with a pool/spa and is often enclosed by a large screened structure. It usually incorporates a roof (covered area), fireplace, or outdoor kitchen. This “living area” is not counted in the living area square footage of a home but will show in the total square footage.

Verandah: is also a covered open area or porch. It is also described as an open pillared gallery, generally roofed, and built around a central structure. It is often partly enclosed by a railing and frequently extends across the rear and sides of the structure.

Loggia:  is the name given to an architectural feature, originally of Italian design. It is often a gallery or corridor at ground level, sometimes higher, on the facade of a building and open to the air on one side, where it is supported by columns or pierced openings in the wall.

Porch: is a structure attached to a building, forming a covered entrance to a doorway. It is external to the walls of the main building, and is usually enclosed by screen, latticework, broad windows, or other lightly framed walls extending from the main structure.

Solana:  Spanish for “The Sunny Side” this is the name given for a style of covered outdoor living room, many times including an outdoor kitchen, fireplace, and casual style furnishings.

So there you have it. These terms have very similar meanings and are used interchangeably depending on the style and design of the home.

Whatever you call them though, Dan Sater’s house plans offer the most unique outdoor designs around. By incorporating his signature “cornerless” glass sliders that disappear into the walls, he eliminates the boundary between indoors and out. These fantastic outdoor spaces are great for hanging out, whether to enjoy the pool, host a cookout, or just play a quiet game of cards with friends. Lemonade anyone?
