Mediterranean-Style Homes: Beauty, Form and Function

Mediterranean-Style Homes

The Mediterranean architectural style is a combination of ideas that evolved from many periods and many regions of the world. Influences from Italy, Spain, and a variety of other countries can be found in this staple of architectural style, popular since the early 1900s.

Though the Mediterranean style originated in European countries north of the Mediterranean Sea, it can often be referred to today as “Spanish modern.” Many homes in states that have Spanish history, such as Florida and California, were built in this unique and timeless style. Inspired by Spanish and Mexican missions, the red tile roofs (originally created from clay pots), arched doorways, and rough plaster exteriors are typical of classic Mediterranean-style homes. Over time, inspirations from other European countries could be seen in this beautiful ornate style of architecture.

One such example of the composite nature of Mediterranean style can be found in Sater Design’s “Mirella” home plan. This home plan offers a distinct Mediterranean-inspired exterior that is complemented by a soft contemporary interior. This combination yields elegance and sophistication, yet provides relaxed indoor and outdoor living.

Benefits of Mediterranean-Style Homes

Mediterranean-style homes are frequently found in states with warm climates due to their ability to remain cool. The half tube shape of the roof tiles allow for an air pocket to form in the tunnel, which helps to keep the home cool. Inside the home flooring is often made of tile, keeping feet cool on a hot day.

Typical to the Mediterranean style, open floor plans provide for optimal views and breezes from large windows and balconies. Interiors open to courtyards and patios, such as in our popular “Ferretti” plan. This charming home plan features private, family and guest spaces filled with Mediterranean design details.

The Mediterranean-style home’s exterior offers a unique look with brick or stucco that is generally painted a lighter color to contrast with the home’s roof. A low-pitched gable or hipped roof is common with Mediterranean-style homes.Details such as carved doors, decorative railings, and stonework are also typically seen in Mediterranean style.
