5 Famous Mediterranean Revival Homes to Inspire Your Home Plan

Do you feel overwhelmed by the countless array of house plans to choose from? Look no further! Here are 5 Famous Mediterranean Revival Homes to inspire your home plan. Select a timeless architectural style with a Mediterranean house plan. This architectural type reflects the lifestyle and customs of the Mediterranean region through its calming and elegant style – the open and airy rooms, the arched windows and doors, and the low-pitched, tiled roof send you into a different time and place. Many don’t realize that, while influenced by European and South American architecture, the Mediterranean style is actually an eclectic blend first popularized by noted American architect Addison Mizner in the 1920s.

You will find similarities between Mediterranean homes, Italian villas and Spanish Revival homes, but they all have that breezy, sun-baked feel that will make your off hours seem like vacation. If you feel undecided on what type of Mediterranean styled house you want, here are a few famous houses that may inspire you:

Villa Vizcaya– Located in Miami, Villa Vizcaya sits on Biscayne Bay in the historic neighborhood of Coconut Grove. The estate was built beginning in 1914, and was designed to imitate Tuscan Renaissance architecture, as evidenced by the red-tiled roof and sizeable Italian gardens. The county now owns the property, which is open to the public for visiting.

Greenacres– This home was designed by architect Sumner Spaulding and the landscaping was designed by A.E. Hanson from 1928-29. Greenacres is located in Benedict Canyon, in Beverly Hills, CA and was inspired by the Villa Palmieri, which sits overlooking Florence, Italy.

Hearst Castle– A perfect example of the magnificence exemplified by Mediterranean architecture. Hearst Castle is located in San Simeon, CA, and was designed by Julia Morgan for the famous newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst. Today, it can be visited by the public, as it is a state park and a national historical landmark.

El Mirasol– This epic Spanish colonial revival mansion was designed by Addison Mizner, the father of the Mediterranean style. The private residence of the Stotesburys (a wealthy Palm Beach family, prominent in the 20s and 30s) for years, this architectural marvel was demolished in the 1950s to make way for a sub-development.

Hayes Mansion(pictured above)- Located in San Jose, CA, this luxurious mansion was built in 1905 by architect George Page as a Spanish Colonial revival home. It is a fine example of a Mediterranean styled home with its stucco walls, loggia, and imported marble.

Looking at these examples, you can see why choosing a Mediterranean house plan is the way to go. By styling your home in this fashion, you can emulate the laid back, breezy lifestyle of those who live by the Mediterranean Sea. Which of the houses listed above do you love the most?
